5 ideas for a weekend away in the UK

At this time of year I would usually be spending my evenings on lonely planet, Pinterest and flicking through glossy travel brochures, looking for inspiration for our next travel adventure. However, this year is going to be different. As we are having lots of work done on our house, we are looking to save as much money as possible and go away closer to home. So, I’ve been scouring the web for ideas for a weekend away in the UK – trying to find interesting and different things to do, which would be just as fun as going abroad…. only cheaper. I have travelled all around the world from South America to Australia, however I’ve not seen much of England and I’ve never been to Scotland or Wales, so this has got to change. There is literally so much on my doorstep that needs to be seen and 2016 is the perfect opportunity to do it.

5 Things to do in the UK - Rent a Cottage

Hire a Cottage

This was recommended to me by my good friend, Kirstie. She recently stayed in a beautiful cottage in Dorset with her family and it looked just gorgeous, and was a total bargain. Cottages are a great idea, especially if you are travelling as a family or larger group as you can split the cost. A lot are also dog friendly so it’ll be our first holiday with Robbie-dog too.

Visit an Observatory

Another good friend of mine, Rachael (who is a secret astronaut, in training) loves visiting the Kielder Observatory in Northumberland.  She has shared some of the most beautiful photographs of her trips and it looks just stunning, apparently up in Keilder Water they have the darkest skies in England and is one of the best locations in the country for stargazing. We have so much light pollution where we live so it would be fantastic to see the stars properly.

Stay in a Treehouse

Stay in a Treehouse

There is this beautiful place in mid-Sussex (not that far from us) that I have wanted to stay at for years. Castle Cottage B&B in Petworth has the most beautiful tree-house room, set in stunning surroundings –  you can hardly believe that you are in the UK. The breakfast looks to die for too. For a short break away, not too far from home – this would be perfect.

Glamping

Camping doesn’t always mean tents and soggy wellies – how cute is this retro VW Campervan? This way you can hit the road and really see the sights around the UK, stopping along the way. When I was little, my parents had a similar campervan to this and took me all around France in it – maybe that is where I got my travel bug from?

Brighton

Come to Brighton!

Of course, my home town Brighton has so much to offer and is literally right on my doorstep. There is tons to do for both tourists and locals alike here, my favourites being the annual Fringe Festival and Foodies Festival. Brighton is one of the most vibrant, cultural cities in the UK, there is always something going on. You could also hire a bike, a scooter or a segway and zoooom down the promenade, taking in the scenery and a gelato along the way.

Where do you like to stay within the UK? Any weekend away ideas gratefully received!
