Create a budget
Work out how much you want to spend on a car and stick to it – you can filter most website by cost, so I found this a good tool to stop me looking at more expensive cars and going over my budget! Arrange a viewing
When you see your car of dreams, contact the owner to arrange a viewing, it’s a good idea to chose a reliable, trustworthy dealer to avoid post-sale problems. Check the Vehicle and Paperwork
Ensure you’ve checked the vehicles paperwork – you’d be looking to see the listed keeper is selling the car from the address stated on the V5C logbook, you would then check the logbook registration and chassis numbers against those on vehicle. You would then want to check the service history as well as viewing any receipts from work carried out on the vehicle.
When you check the vehicle, make sure this is done in daylight and good weather – check for dents, scratches or other damage. Be sure to check inside too, checking the electric windows, sound system, air conditioning and heating too.
Take the car for a test drive
Once you are happy with all of the above, make sure you take the car out for a test drive. You need to be assured that the car drives and handles correctly, and performs as you would expect. Check that car starts easily and doesn’t make any unusual sounds. Does the steering pull to one side? Is there any telltale smoke coming from the exhaust? Keep all these things in mind whilst you are taking it for a spin!
Finalise the Deal
When you’ve agreed a price and are happy to go ahead with the car – it’s essential to make sure terms are agreed in writing, with a receipt that both parties sign and keep a copy of. It should show vehicle details, price, and terms of sale and both the seller’s and buyer’s name and address.
