Note to self: Don’t forget to pack the First Aid Kit! | AD

Post in paid partnership with Safe & Sound Health

How many times have I said that to myself, yet halfway through a day out we’ll have a bump or a scrape and I realised I’ve forgotten to pack the first aid kit…. again. Mum fail. However, during lockdown as we’ve been out and about so much I think I’ve finally cracked the art of packing the perfect change bag – snacks, change of clothes and the important mini-first aid kit. It only took me three years!

Both of my girls are super active little toddlers – Violet loves to run and will disappear off across a field at the speed of light and Pearl is a climber – if she sees a fence or a climbing frame, she is off! Of course, with two free-spirited fast, little beings (who often run off in different directions) we have a fair amount of bumps and grazes. I think it’s all part of the course of being a toddler, although of course, I try my best to prevent it where I can.

We live by the sea so one of our favourite places to hang out in the summer is the beach. Only a stones throw from our house we pop down to dip our toes in the sea and eat ice cream often. But the one annoying thing about our local beach is it’s not golden sands, but pebble – which is so tricky to walk on for toddlers who are just finding their feet! The number of trips and falls we’ve had on those pebbles I can’t tell you, but it doesn’t stop the girls. It’s their favourite place in the world.

On a recent visit, Pearl toppled over and banged both her knee and elbow. There were some tears but a kiss, cuddle and an ice cream soon cheered her up.

Luckily, I’d just packed our mini first aid kit to my change bag which has made the world of difference as now we are prepared for anything! The girls can adventure fearlessly without worrying about trips or falls, as I’ve got them covered.

In our mini-first aid kit is:

Childrens Fun Plasters – which come in two designs, Princesses and Dinosaurs! The girls love these so much they sometimes the girls pretend to get an injury just to get a colourful plaster from me! They are so gentle on the skin and hypoallergenic too. Having a pretty design certainly does take the edge of the ‘baddie’ though, that’s for sure. I bet you can guess which child would pick which design!

Antiseptic Spray – An essential for cleansing and soothing bumps and scrapes on the go. The gentle formula is painless to apply and helps to stop wounds from getting infected.

Antibacterial Hand Foam and Hand Sanitiser – an absolute essential, especially at the moment during the pandemic. You never know if you’ll be able to clean your hands on the go so having a bottle of this to hand is vital as it kills 99.99% of bacteria. Before attending to an injury, make sure you clean your hands thoroughly.

Other items which are really handy to pack too:

  • Small, medium and large sterile gauze dressings
  • Latex Gloves
  • tweezers
  • Scissors
  • thermometer (preferably digital)
  • painkillers such as paracetamol (or infant paracetamol for children)
  • crêpe rolled bandages
  • safety pins

Of course, it’s horrible to see little ones getting hurt. With a ton of kisses and cuddles and by having the right items on hand can help patch them up quickly and take their mind off the pain and they’ll be back to zooming about in no time!
