While it’s true that a brand-new car will lose value as soon as you drive it off the forecourt, you can maintain more of its worth for longer with proper treatment during your ownership. Explore our top tips for long-term vehicle care which will keep your car running smoothly and safely while safeguarding this significant investment.
- Regular services
Supported by biannual checks if you drive more than 6,000 miles a year, an annual full car service is essential for looking after the inner workings of your car. During a full service, a mechanic will check the engine including related fans and filters, test the front and rear brakes, review the skeleton beneath the car and assess all systems like steering, suspension and hydraulics.
- Fluid refills
Between services, your most important task is refilling the fluids in your car. This includes oil which lubricates the engine for superior performance and fuel efficiency, coolant which regulates the temperature and screenwash.
You can access the containers by lifting the front bonnet and unscrewing the protective caps. Use the dipstick to assess your oil level: it should be somewhere between the minimum and maximum lines. Using a funnel when filling up your oil is advisable rather than risking pouring it on the car’s inner mechanisms! The coolant and screenwash containers are larger and easier to top up with free pouring.
- Tyre checks
You must regularly check your tyres because their condition is essential to your safety and the smooth running of your vehicle.
Having the correct pressure in your tyres improves steering and grip and ensures expected stopping distances, so schedule regular air pump visits. You should also assess for punctures, rips and bulges which could cause tyres to go flat or burst suddenly, and check the tread depth using a 20p coin to ensure it meets the legal limit.
- Exterior protection
Cars are resistant to damage from weather, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore exterior protection measures – especially if you want your vehicle to look as good as new for as long as possible.
When washing your car, use proper shampoo and sponges designed not to damage the paintwork. Adding a layer of wax will help prevent scratches and chips, rust, and fading and discolouration from prolonged exposure to the sun. Prioritise UV-resistant waxes and apply a paint sealant beforehand for superior colour protection.
Be careful where you park your car too. Especially in winter when harsh weather conditions like storms and snow are common, use a sheltered space like a garage where possible. If parking on the street or your driveway, find shady spots and consider getting a waterproof car cover.
