Tips for maintaining healthy hair after colouring

Colouring your hair can give you a fresh style and boost your confidence. Yet although the process involved in a professional hair colour makes you look fantastic, it can also leave your precious locks feeling dry and damaged if you aren’t careful.

Following the treatment, you need to adjust your routine to keep your hair vibrant and healthy. Below, we share some top tips to help you maintain shine and strength while enjoying your new colour.

Wait before washing

Washing your hair too soon after getting it coloured can cause it to fade more quickly. Wait at least 48 hours before washing it, as this gives it enough time to set properly.

When you do wash your hair, use lukewarm water instead of hot, as this can open up the cuticle and lead to colour loss.

Use sulphate-free products

Sulphates are harsh detergents that can strip away natural oils and fade your hair colour, whereas sulphate-free products are gentler and help preserve its vibrancy. Look for products labelled as colour-safe or formulated for dyed hair.

Deep condition regularly

Chemicals in dyes can leave your hair dry and brittle. To combat this, do a deep condition at least once a week. Use a deep conditioning mask or treatment that moisturises and nourishes your hair from within. Doing this consistently helps restore moisture balance, making your locks softer and more manageable.

Limit heat styling

Excessive heat styling can damage your hair and cause your colour to fade faster, so try to limit the use of hairdryers, straighteners, and curling irons.

Prioritise air drying whenever possible to reduce exposure to heat. When you do use styling tools, apply a heat protectant spray to minimise damage.

Protect against the sun

UV rays from the sun can fade your hair colour and dehydrate your hair. When spending time outdoors, protect your locks by wearing a hat or using products that contain UV filters. These products shield you from sun damage and help maintain the richness of your colour.

Use dry shampoo

Washing your hair too frequently can strip away colour and natural oils. To extend the time between washes, use a dry shampoo. This absorbs excess oil at the roots and refreshes your locks without the need for water. This helps preserve your colour and keeps you looking fresh.

Avoid chlorine

Chlorine in swimming pools can cause your colour to fade or even change hue. Before swimming, wet your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner to create a barrier against chlorine. Alternatively, wear a swimming cap for protection. Afterwards, make sure to rinse thoroughly to remove any chlorine residue.

Adjusting your care routine following a colouring treatment is essential to maintain the look and feel of your hair. With a little extra care, your locks will remain strong, shiny and full of life.
