Travelling by Sea with Your Toddler: Essentials for a Non-Stressful Vacation

There’s something about being out on the wide open sea that instantly relaxes you. However, if you’re planning on bringing your toddler along, you may be wondering if relaxation will even be possible.

The good news is that you don’t need to avoid travelling by sea just because you have a young child in tow. Like any other vacation, with a little preparation, everyone can enjoy the journey.

8 Tips to Help You Simplify Sea Travel with Toddlers

Whether you’re planning a family vacation to the Bahamas, Maldives or Aruba, getting there by sea is half the fun! And, there are plenty of ways to ensure your toddler is just as happy as you are.

1. Pack Smart (But Not Everything)

Along with the basics such as diapers, wipes, sippy cups and a few changes of clothes, bring along a few of their comfort items, too. Only pick the soft toys, games and other items they play with most often.

Over and above this, pack for outdoor conditions. Think baby-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. You may also want to talk to your doctor about safe remedies for toddlers if you’re worried about motion sickness.

2. Book Toddler-Friendly Accommodation

Choose a cabin with enough space or easy access to facilities like restaurants and pools. It’s also best to avoid rooms with balconies unless they’re 100% childproof.

And don’t forget to enquire about cribs or bed rails so that everyone is sleeping safely and stress-free.

3. Stick to a Routine as Much as Possible

In an effort to avoid those nasty meltdowns, try and stick to your usual meal and nap times. You may also want to bring a familiar blanket or white noise machine to make bedtime a little more comfortable.

4. Find Out More About the Kid-Friendly Amenities

Before you finalise your cruise, find out about the kid-friendly amenities on offer. There may be a kids’ club (some accept toddlers with parent supervision), toddler splash zones and pools, and family entertainment like puppet shows or magic acts.

5. Keep a Go Bag Handy

You don’t want to have to run back to your room every time you need something, so pack a go bag before you head out your cabin door. Think snacks, water, a toy or two, spare clothes, diapers and any emergency medicine.

6. Embrace the Slow Pace

In most instances, toddlers aren’t going to rush through excursions. For this reason, it’s better to choose shorter, slower-paced shore trips that involve animals, parks or beaches. Save the scuba trip for your next vacation!

7. Nap During the Day, Not Dinner

If you’re planning to enjoy evening meals, let your toddler nap beforehand. It can make the experience less stressful for everyone. Plus, toddlers are more likely to eat if everyone else is eating, too.

8. Lower Your Expectations and Raise Flexibility

Things may not go perfectly when you’re travelling by sea, and that’s okay. Go with the flow (pun intended!), and you’re more likely to enjoy the ride.

It’s perfectly fine to plan your day and work in fun activities, but be prepared for the fact that your little one may not always be in a great mood and use this time to relax in your cabin.

Time to Set Sail

Travelling by sea can be a fun and exciting experience for the entire family. And, provided you can give your child a similar routine to what they have at home, you should be able to enjoy a stress-free vacation on the high seas.
