According to the Office for National Statistics, the rate of burglary in England and Wales rose by around 5% in the year ending June 2025. Then, later in the year, the government released around forty thousand prisoners early, in an attempt to ease crowding.
If you’re worried about the prospect of your home being targeted, then you have good reason to be concerned. But the good news is that the problem can be addressed through a range of fairly straightforward measures. Let’s take a look at a few of the more effective ones.
Strengthening Entry Points
Burglars will attempt to enter your home through a limited number of points. They won’t try to tunnel their way in, or knock down the walls; instead, obviously, they’ll go for your window and doors. You’ll therefore want to ensure that all of these entry points are appropriately secure.
This applies in particular to your garage door, which might be vulnerable to being physically forced. Modern, electric garage doors might not only be more secure – they might also be more energy and space efficient.
Lighting and Outdoor Security
If your fences are tall and difficult to vault, and you have brilliant white security lights blazing whenever motion is detected, then you’ll make would-be intruders think twice before approaching your home. Well-lit pathways and gardens can deter crime, as can visible CCTV cameras. You might even install signage that informs everyone that there are security measures in place.
Using Smart Technology
Modern security measures can often be linked together as part of your home network. This might allow you to monitor your home remotely. Wherever you are in the world, the right application, and the right system of security cameras, might allow you to see what’s going on in your living room.
Community and Preventative Measures
Among the more effective ways to deter crime is actually a fairly traditional one. If you come together with your local community, through a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, then you can keep an eye on one another’s properties, and stay on top of the latest information. Joining community pages on Facebook and other social media sites can also be worthwhile. If three houses on your street have been burgled in the last week, then you’ll want to know about it. This will allow you to prepare for an attack – or, better yet, to prevent it from happening.
